Keeping your cut trees as fresh as possible:

Make a fresh cut on the butt of your tree to eliminate the seal and to allow for the tree to absorb water.  The amount necessary to cut off can vary.
The fresh cut surface should be creamy-white, not yellow or brown.
You have 5 to 6 hours after making this fresh cut to get your tree into a water stand without the necessity of making another fresh cut.
The inner rings of the tree are the least efficient in taking up water.  Removing the outer rings of wood to fit the butt of a tree into a water stand takes away the most efficient water-carrying wood.
Place the tree in a stand which will hold at least one gallon of water.  An average tree may consume between two pints and a gallon of water per day.
If the water level drops below the butt, a seal will form which does not permit the tree to take in any more water.
Place the tree away from heat sources such as vents, fireplace, radiators, or sunny windows.
If the tree is not going into the house soon after purchasing it, it should be stored on a cool porch or patio away from the wind and sun.
